The Harz Railway has a very turbulent history. Resulting from the nationalization within Deutche Reichbahn (DR) in 1949 of two of the three meter gauge networks that served the massif. It is denationalized on 1 February 1993 and adopted by the company Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH (HSB). It comprises two main lines: Nordhausen - Drei Annen Hohne - Wernigerode Gernrode (NWE)- Alesisbad - Stiege - Hasselfeld (eg GHE) and three branches: Drei Annen Hohne - Brocken (NWE) Alexisbad - Harzgerode (GHE) Stiege - Eisfelder Talmühle allowing connection between GHE and NWE.
